Console gaming has become all the rage of late, and games for just about everyone have come out over the past several years. There are the well known FPS games -- first-person shooters -- and RPGs, or role playing games, and, with increasing frequency, there are higher and higher quality sports games on the market. This starting with racing games, such as Midnight Club and Forza Motorsport, but gradually broadened in scope to include football, soccer, and even baseball games. A handful of these games can be found on the Xbox or Playstation platforms, and a lot can be found on the Wii. Let's start with a look at the former. The MLB 2K* Series
Ever since the turn of the millenium, ESPN has co-produced a series of games -- the Major League Baseball series. Each year, a new game has come out, with updated rosters and new scenery, as well as updated graphics and improved gameplay. This is a historically important gaming series, but, unfortunately, it has been cancelled as of 2014. Still, the last installment in the series -- 2k13 -- is an awesome game, and it is still widely sold for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 consoles. It's a bit more difficult these days than it once was to find a huge group of people to play with, but that doesn't mean it's not more than worth checking out for those of you interested in MLB games in general. Puppet Soccer 2014 is another great soccer game perfect for all sport lovers.Super Sluggers
For those searching for something a little more light hearted, consider the Mario Super Sluggers game. This is a best-seller for the Wii gaming system, and, as the title suggests, is centered around the characters and settings of the Mario universe. This means players can play as their favorite Italian plumber or his brother; Bowser, or Peach; or any of the other characters featured in the Mario game series. This is obviously not the most realistic of baseball games, but seeing as the Wii is generally catered to a younger audience, this is in keeping with the intent of the console. This is definitely worth checking out if you're primarily interested in playing baseball games with your kids. The Bigs 2
The Bigs 2 is one of the more realistic, best-developed baseball games on the market. It features "heroic gameplay", a variety of realistic rosters, updated team information, and a host of playing locations. It has an advanced gameplay system, allowing players to progress from, effectively, a nobody, to a hall of famer, and features a variety of fun mini-games as well, to break up the more serious aspects of the gameplay and provide players with some relief from their attempts to conquer the MLB in the virtual world of The Bigs 2. This is another best-selling title, popular with fans even to this day, and is definitely a staple in every baseball game enthusiast's gaming cabinet. You can also check one of the greatest American Football flash games in the world called Axis Football.MLB 2k12
We mentioned the 2K series above, and talked specifically about 2K13. Well, 2K12, despite being older, is certainly not a bad example. As far as baseball games are concerned, 2K12 really changed the face of the genre; it was one of the first to incorporate high-quality graphics, advanced, intuitive controls, and realistic team and tournament information that really mimicked the baseball world as it is in real life. MLB 2k12, for those interested in playing an older series (that is, playing with teams and rosters that 'once were' for the sake of nostalgia or fantasy efforts), is definitely worth at least trying out, and most would agree that it certainly merits a purchase, as well.
